AP Music Theory

Erin Beave

AP MUSIC THEORY is a rigorous academic course focused on both the written and aural aspects of music. Students in this class will study the fundamentals of written music as they apply to composition, performance, and analysis. Students will be able to understand the construction of a variety of harmonic structures and common musical forms, develop aural skills as they apply to musical competency, and create music in several traditional musical styles. Students who wish to receive college credit should elect to take the College Board Advanced Placement Music Theory Exam, for which this course should prepare them. Prior to enrolling for this course, students should be able to read traditional musical notation in at least one clef, and should also have an understanding of basic musical fundamentals gained through either musical performance-based courses or through private study. Enrollment is limited to grades 11 and 12.
